Types of dentures
Dentures are made custom for each patient from molds taken of your existing teeth. The teeth are placed in a flesh-colored acrylic base, which is shaped to fit over either your lower or upper gums. There are three main forms of denture: conventional full, immediate full, and partial dentures.
- Conventional full dentures are placed in your mouth only after your natural teeth have been removed and your gums entirely healed. This healing process can take several months. During the healing process, you will not have teeth of any kind.
- Immediate full dentures are created from a mold taken of your teeth prior to their removal and placed in your mouth immediately following removal of your teeth. These dentures will need to be adjusted within several months following their insertion, as the jawbone will change its shape as it heals from the removal of your teeth. This change in shape can make immediate full dentures loose, causing painful rubbing between your gums and the dentures if not addressed.
- Partial dentures cover only the portion of your mouth where teeth have been removed. They are held in place with the use of a wire frame and may be used in lieu of bridges.
Caring for dentures
Like your natural teeth, dentures take a good deal of abuse. Over time, they will need to be reshaped and aligned, both to repair normal wear and to adjust their shape to the changing shape of your jaw. Dentures must be brushed on a daily basis and also soaked in a cleansing solution or water when not in use. In order to ensure blood flow to gum tissues, denture wearers should also brush their gums, tongue, and palate each day prior to inserting their dentures. A gentle, skilled San Fernando Valley dentist at Sterling Smile Dental Care can help you adjust to living with and caring for your new dentures.
